The main focus of the theory group has been on the construction and understanding of a consistent quantum theory of gravity. The most promising candidate theory to achieve this is string theory. The main activities of the group relate to holography (entanglement and spacetime; holographic thermalization; black holes, complexity and quantum chaos;…) and the study of the geometric nature of spacetime invoked by string theory and its dualities.
More recently the group got involved with gravitational wave physics as well. Some of its members are active members of the LIGO/Virgo/Kagra collaboration where they contribute to the modeling of the cosmological stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) and the observational search for the astrophysical SGWB. Besides this we are involved in the development of the Einstein Telescope and its R&D center ETpathfinder in Maastricht.
